Horns Offense – 3 Point Plays For Shooters

These actions out of the Horns offense create scoring opportunities by using flare screens or stagger screens to free up the team’s best 3 point shooters.


Double Flare – Part 1 – High Post Entry

This action out of the Horns set can be used when the team needs a quick 3 pointer. This example shows the point guard (1) receiving the shot but it can be interchanged with any other position depending on team personnel.

1 passes to 4 in the high post.

As that happens, 2 sprints down to the elbow standing right behind 5.


Double Flare – Part 2 – Double Flare Screens

4 has the ball at the left elbow.

2 and 5 set double flare screens for 1.

1 comes off those screens and pops out either near the free throw line extended or slightly below (shown on the diagram).

4 makes a skip pass over the top of the screeners to 1.

1 takes the open shot.

Also, if only 2 points are needed, 2 can slip the screen and roll to the basket if 2’s defender decides to cheat over the screen.


Stagger – Part 1 – Ball Screen Dribble Entry

This is another action from the Horns series that can be used to create an open look for the team’s best shooter.

The action starts out in basic Horns with an on ball screen from 5 at the high post.

1 comes off that screen and dribbles to the wing area near the foul line extended.


Stagger – Part 2 – High Post Stagger Screens

After 5 sets the on ball screen for 1, 5 immediately sets a pin down screen for 2.

At the same time, 4 leaves the left side high post and also goes to set another down screen for 2 near 5’s previous spot.

2 comes off those screens with a zipper cut to the top of the key.

1 reverses the ball to 2 who takes the open 3 point shot.


Wheel – Part 1 – Option For 2

This Horns action creates a couple of 3 point scoring opportunities for the team’s two best shooters.

1 dribbles toward the left wing area.

As that happens, 5 and 4 go to set double stagger screens for 2.

3 also leaves the ball side corner and moves to ball side low post to occupy the defense.

2 comes off the screens and cuts to the top of the key looking for the pass.

1 reverses the ball to 2 who takes the open three point shot.


Wheel – Part 2 – Option For 3

If 2 is not open, 4 and 5 immediately set double stagger screens for 3 near the painted area.

3 comes off of those screens and should spot up near the wing area.

3 can spot up above or below the foul line extended.

2 reverses the ball to 3 who takes the open shot.
