Princeton Offense Basketball Plays

A brief look at some basketball diagrams from the Princeton Offense. These plays are good for teams with versatile players that can pass, screen, cut, dribble, and shoot.


Pass and Screen Away 1

5 will flash to the high post and receive a pass from 1. Next, 1 will screen away from the ball for 2.

2 will make a backdoor cut and run towards the opposite side of the court and receive a down screen from 3.

5 has several options with the ball. 5 can pass to 2 under the basket on the backdoor cut if it is open or pass to 2 when he comes off the down screen set by 3.

5 can also pass to 3 after the down screen is set who will roll to the basket.

Finally, if no one is open, 5 can pass back to 1 to initiate another play set.


Pass and Screen Away 2

2 will initiate this play by passing to 5, who starts in the high post.

After the pass, 2 will then screen away from the ball, set a screen for 4 and pop out pass the 3 point line.

4 will make a backdoor cut towards the other side of the court. 3 will set a down screen for 4.

5 can then pass to 4 on the backdoor cut for a layup if it is open or when 4 comes off the down screen set by 3.

5 can also pass to 3, who will roll to the basket after setting the down screen for 4.

Finally, if no one is open, 5 can pass back to 2 to reset and initiate another play.


Pass and Cut Away – Part 1

2 will pass to 1 and 5 will flash to the high post at the opposite elbow of the ball.

1 will pass to 5 and 2 will cut through towards the other side of the court.

1 will also cut through towards the other side of the court timing the cut after 2 begins his cut.

5 can either pass to 2 or to 1 when they both cut to the basket if it is open.


Pass and Cut Away – Part 2

If 1 was not open after the cut to the basket, 1 will receive a down screen from 4 and pop out to the 3-point line to receive a pass from 5.

After setting the down screen, 4 will also roll to the basket as another passing option for 5.

If 1 is still not open after coming off the down screen or if 4 is not open after the roll, 5 can dribble towards 3.

If 3’s man is overplaying and denying the pass, 3 can cut backdoor and receive a pass from 5.

As another possibility, 3 can set a down screen for 2 who will pop out to the 3-point line to receive a pass from 5.

Finally, if 2 is not open at the 3-point line, he can pass to 3 who will post up down low after setting the down screen.


Pass and Follow – Part 1

2 initiates the play by passing to 1. After the pass, 5 will flash to the high post elbow opposite the ball.

1 will pass to 5 and 2 will then cut through to the other side of the court.

5 can then pass to 2 on the cut to the basket or after 2 comes off a down screen set by 3.


Pass and Follow – Part 2

Alternatively, after 5 receives the pass from 1, 1 will follow the ball while 4 fakes a high split and cuts backdoor to receive a pss from 5.

If 4 is not open after the backdoor cut, 5 can pass to 1 who will pop out to the free throw line area.


Chin A – Part 1

2 passes to 1 and cuts through to the opposite side of the court by way of a back screen set by 5 who flashes to the high post elbow opposite the ball.

1 will pass to 3 and 3 will pass to 2 on the cut when 2 is near the basket if it is open.


Chin A – Part 2

If 2 is not open after the back screen set by 5, 5 will then screen on the ball side elbow for 1 and roll to the basket.

3 can then pass to 5 who just rolled to the basket or to 1 who can shoot the mid range jump shot or drive to the basket.


Chin B – Part 1

2 will pass to 1 and cut through to the other side of the court via the back screen set by 5 who flashes to the high post elbow opposite the ball.

1 then passes to 3 and 3 can pass to 2 while 2 is coming off the back screen under the basket if it is open.

If 2 is not open for the layup, 3 will then dribble back towards the middle and 5 will set a ball side screen for 1 who goes to the opposite side of the court .

4 will also go to 2’s original spot.


Chin B – Part 2

3 will pass to 4 and 4 will pass to 1 on the right wing.

After 1 receives the pass, 3 will cut through to the other side via a back screen set by 5 at the high post elbow opposite the ball.

1 can then pass to 3 for the backdoor layup if it is open.


Chin B – Part 3

If 1 could not get the pass to 3 for the open layup, 5 can flash to the ball side elbow and set a back screen for 4.

4 will cut through towards the basket via the back screen and receive a pass from 1 for a layup.


Chin B – Part 4

If 4 is not open to receive the pass from 1 under the basket, 4 can come back high and set a back screen for 5.

5 can then cut to the basket by way of the back screen and 4 can pop out to the free throw mid range area.

1 can then pass to 5 under the basket for the layup or to 4 for the mid range jump shot.
