Zone Offense Quick Hitters

Quick hitters that are good against zones such as 2-3 zone or 1-2-2 zone.


Cutter – Part 1

This quick hitter seeks to create an open jump shot against the zone defense.

1 will pass the ball to 2 and when 2 receives the ball, 4 will step out behind the three point arc and 2 will pass to 4.

After 4 receives the pass, 5 will come up to the mid-post area and 2 will cut through to the weak side corner behind the three point arc.

1 will replace 2’s original position on the left wing while 3 will replace 1’s original position towards the middle of the court.


Cutter – Part 2

Now, 4 has the ball in the left corner and will quickly reverse the pass back to 1.

1 will then swiftly reverse the ball to 3 and 3 will immediately reverse the ball to 2 in the right corner behind the 3 point line for the open shot.

In addition, when 3 receives the pass from 1, 4 can cut to the short corner on the right side of the court and 5 can flash to the mid post area on the right side as well.

If 2 cannot get the open shot, 2 can dribble back towards the wing to improve the passing angle and then 2 can pass to 4 or 5 for the open jump shot.


Deep Corner – Part 1

This is a quick hitter that can be implemented against a 2-3 zone. This play creates a jump shot opportunity in the right deep corner.

1 will pass to 2 on the right wing.

2 will pass to 4 in the corner, cut into the zone, and position on the low post block on ball side.

From here, 1 will fill 2’s original position on the wing.


Deep Corner – Part 2

4 will reverse the ball back to 1 and set a side screen for 2 near the low post block.

2 will cut around the screen set by 4 and spot up behind the three point line in the corner.

1 will pass to 2 for the open jump shot.


Flash Dive

This quick hitter creates a quick layup near the basket against the zone defense.

4 and 5 will flash to the high post area while 2 and 3 will dive down into the corners behind the 3 point line

1 will pass to 4 and 5 will cut to the middle of the floor.

4 then hits 5 with a quick pass at the rim for a quick layup.


Flash High Low – Part 1

This quick hitter can create an open jump shot or layup near the basket against the zone defense.

1 passes to 3, then fills the left wing behind the three point arc.

As this occurs, 2 will move to the deep corner on the left side.

5 will cut across the lane and set a ball screen for 3, while 4 fills and replaces 5’s original position.

3 will come off the screen and dribble to the middle of the floor by the free throw area.


Flash High Low – Part 2

3 can now shoot the mid range shot or pass to 1 who can then shoot the 3 if open.

1 can also pass to 2 if 2 has a better look than 1.

Additionally, 4 can flash to the high post area and 2 can pass to 4.

4 can now play high low with 5 who flashes across the lane to fill 4’s previous position.


Horns – Part 1

This play looks to get the ball to one of the post players against the zone defense.

1 comes off the screen set by 5 to shift the zone and when 1 gets to the free throw line extended, 3 will sprint to the opposite corner and 2 will come up high to the left wing.

At the same time, 5 will roll opposite to the left post block and 4 will step out behind the 3 point line.

1 will then reverse the ball to 4.


Horns – Part 2

4 will now pass to 2 on the wing and 2 will pass to 3 in the corner.

3 will try to pass inside if 5 has the match-up advantage.

If 3 cannot pass to 5, 3 can dribble up towards the wing in order to make the zone’s wing defender move up.

2 will move towards the middle of the court, 5 will step out to the short corner, and 4 will dive down to the mid post area.

From this point, 3 will read the defense and pass to 4 in the mid post area or to 5 in the short corner.


Mid-Range

This is a quick hitter that can be used against 2-3 zone. This play can create a jump shot for the wing player or a layup for the post player.

5 will set up a position behind the left wing defender.

1 will pass to 2 while 4 screens the middle defender of the zone.

2 will dribble drive inside the arc but right outside the lane.

At the same time as 2 drives inside the arc, 5 will fill 4’s original position near the right post block.

2 has several options depending on what the outside back defender of the zone does.

If the defender steps up to guard 2, 2 can deliver a quick pass inside to 5 for the layup.

If the defender stays at home, 2 can take the quick dribble pull up jump shot.

Also, if the front defender on ball side comes to help out against 2, 2 can pass the ball back to 1 who can take the open three point shot.


Overload – Part 1

This quick hitter can create a open jump shot for the team’s best shooter.

1 will dribble towards the right wing area.

As this occurs, 2 will V-cut by flashing high as if to receive a pass from 1 and then cutting to the deep corner on ball side.

4 will also fill 1’s original position at the center of the court behind the three point line.


Overload – Part 2

At this point, 1 will reverse the ball to 4.

On that reversal pass, 5 will cut to low post block on the left side and attempt to seal the backside defender.

At the same time, 2 will cut through to the opposite corner and spot up.

4 will reverse the ball to 3 and 3 will quickly reverse the basketball to 2 who can take the open three point shot.

In addition, when 4 reverses the ball to 3, 3 can take the open jump shot if the zone does not move quickly enough.


Post

This quick hitter is designed to get the ball to the team’s post player when the defense is running zone.

1 passes to 2 and 5 moves from the high post to the low post block to move the zone defense.

After 5 is posted on the block, 2 will reverse the ball back to 1 and cut to the weak side corner behind the 3 point line.

1 will dribble to the left wing and pass the ball to 2.

After 2 receives the ball in the corner, 3 will set a screen on the back wing defender of the zone.

At the same time, 4 will set a screen on the middle defender of the zone.

5 will then cut to the strong side below the block and 2 will look to pass to 5 for the layup.


Wing Curl

This play starts out in a box formation and can be utilized against a 2-3 zone or a 1-2-2 zone.

1 passes to 3 on the right elbow of the high post.

After the pass, 1 curls by 3 to simulate a fake hand off and then steps out to the right wing near the free throw line extended.

As soon as 1 fills the wing, 3 will then dribble to the middle of the court.

4 and 5 will set a screen on the sides of the zone and 2 will come off the screens to the opposite wing.

3 will pass to 2 on the wing for the possible open jump shot.

Additionally, if the wing defender that was being screened by 4 is able to get through the screen to guard against 2, 4 can then slip the screen and flash high to the middle of the court.

3 can then pass to 4 for the short jump shot or drive to the basket.


Wing or Post Option – Part 1

This quick hitter looks to create an jump shot or layup against the zone defense.

1 passes to 2 and when the zone defense shifts towards 2, 2 will give a quick look to 4 and 5, then reverse the ball back to 1.

Next, 2 will then curl around the stack formed by 4 and 5 to the opposite block on the right side of the court.

As 2 is posting up on the block, 1 will reverse the ball to 3 and 5 will come up high to the left elbow area.


Wing or Post Option – Part 2

Now, 3 has the ball and will give a quick look to 2 and reverse the ball back to 1.

1 will then dribble to the left wing and 2 will cut to the opposite corner behind the 3 point line.

At the same time, 4 will screen the middle defender of the zone and 5 will fill 4’s original position.

1 can pass to 2 who can take the open jump shot or pass to 5 for the open layup.
